Here are some tips and
information for you to consider before buying a comforter/duvet for
your bed.
1. Comforters
come in various weights and fills so you need an idea of your sleep
preferences. Decide if you want a heavy or light comforter.
Think about your individual sleep preferences. Do you like warm
layers of blankets or maybe even an electric blanket to cuddle
beneath? Do you like the feel of a heavier blanket or do you prefer
a light layer covering you when you sleep? Some folks prefer light
weight covers and a cooler sleeping experience.
2. There are many
different sizes and designations of beds that you will want to
carefully measure you bed. You most likely will not find a comforter
that will perfectly fit your bed. Measure carefully to find a
blanket that best suits your bed keeping in mind the overhang on the
sides and end of the bed. Make sure to buy one large enough.
3. Consider the strength
of the “Fill Power”. This term describes the quality of the down.
Stronger and larger down clusters equals a higher fill power thus
providing superior insulation, better breathing and circulation.
They will generally last longer than the lower fill power rated down
clusters.
4. Pure, white,
hypoallergenic goose down make up the most expensive down comforters
and blankets. Depending on your budget you may opt for the less
expensive “down and feather” combination fill or a lower fill power
or grade of down. Most people spend approximately 1/3 of their time
sleeping and you may decide to go all out with your budget and get
the highest quality available. Remember to watch for sales and
specials to get the right one for you.
5. Although more
expensive, you may also consider purchasing a comforter with
baffles. These keep the down from shifting and thereby help to
eliminate “cold spots”. A high thread count and tightly woven cover
will help keep the down or feathers from escaping.
6. Another important
consideration is the cover. A cover is simply a large pillow case
for the “duvet”, which is a comforter without a cover. The cover is
much easier to clean and will protect the comforter or blanket. Keep
in mind that the cover will add some weight and a decorative cover
could add much more weight.
